Designing Tomorrow

Towards the end of Change by Design, Tim Brown provides a number of inspiring themes to help promote the future of design thinking:

  • begin at the beginning
  • take a human-centered approach
  • fail early, fail often - Leaders should encourage experimentation and accept that there is nothing wrong with failure as long as it happens early and becomes a source of learning.
  • get professional help
  • share the inspiration
  • blend big and small projects
  • budget to the pace of innovation
  • find talent any way you can - The trick is spotting them, nurturing them, and freeing them to do what they do best.  Who would rather build a prototype then write a memo?  Who seems to get more out of working with a team then holed up in a tastefully appointed cubicle?  People are your raw material and your energy supply.
  • design for the cycle
  • don’t ask what?  ask why?
  • open your eyes
  • make it visual
  • build on the ideas of others
  • demand options - don’t settle for the first good idea that comes into your head or seize the first promising solution presented to you.
  • balance your portfolio
  • design a life - think of life as a prototype.  Conduct experiments, make discoveries, and change our perspectives.
