Memorable Quotes

From Right-Brained Children in a Left-Brained World:

Many parents … have an obsession with labeling each child an “A student” or a “D student.”  But in many cases letter grades merely reflect how well a student can regurgitate material under time pressure.  “Teacher’s pets” typically get the A’s; children who challenges the teacher or have a different take on things get C’s or worse.  Letter grades are another remnant of an antiquated educational system that was designed to produce obedient yet unimaginative foot soldiers.  Grades perpetuate the notion that the teacher is the absolute authority, and the child exists only to parrot the instructor’s thoughts and ideas.

Parents who pressure schools to do a better job educating their kids are labeled controlling, enabling, or troublemakers.  They’re accused of making excuses for their kids.  Yet, to my way of thinking, these parents are unsung heroes.  Why don’t schools attach the real problem parents - those who don’t even show a passing interest in their child’s education?
